Matt was born in Springfield, Illinois, where Abraham Lincoln once lived and had his law office. The Lincoln legend ignited Matt’s early interest in the law and service to others. Matt first learned the importance of excellent customer service from his job delivering the local morning newspaper from a Schwinn Sting-Ray bicycle while in grade school. His earliest taste of the law was a “jury verdict” obtained in high school during a mock trial sponsored by a high-school Law Explorer program.
Matt graduated with High Honors from Illinois State University, earning a bachelor's of science degree with a major in accounting. After an internship in Chicago with Price Waterhouse, Matt completed his senior year in college and took and passed the CPA exam. Matt then attended law school at the University of Illinois, where he served on the Law Review and graduated Summa Cum Laude.
In 1983, Matt moved to Texas and joined the law firm of Hughes & Hill (later Hughes & Luce) where he first worked with Ike Shupe. Matt’s 30+ years as a trial lawyer have spanned the tumultuous savings and loan crisis, the internet revolution, bubble and crash, and various real estate booms and busts. At Hughes & Luce, Matt maintained a general litigation practice that included business disputes and a variety of real estate and land use matters. He also served stints as the firm's head of the Litigation section and Chief Operating Partner. Since 2001, Matt’s practice has focused on property rights matters, with a particular emphasis on land use and real estate-related disputes.
Matt’s dispute work includes experience in the following areas:
- Eminent Domain (Condemnation)
